I am a psychologist living and working in northern Ontario. I grew up in Windsor progressively moving north so I am familiar with many parts of this province. My primary work focus has been trauma for many years with first responder and with residential school survivors. Prior to that I coordinated a family violence program. Through my private practice I worked within the private sector offering services to mines and mills across the north. This involved direct counselling as well as critical incident debriefing in these dangerous settings. In my region, both English and French are spoken equally and I am bilingual and able to serve the francophone population. I have been involved in both the hiring and treatment of first responders for well over 25 years and for a brief period worked for the OPP to help design the mental health strategy. I continue to work with EMS and fire, often through WSIB. Through this work I am comfortable with participating in return to work plans. Outside of work, I have raised two daughters, both adopted from China. This has given me a different world view as they navigated life as Asians in a small, relatively nondiverse northern town. Through them I have learned the beauty of integrating into a community and turning friends into family.
